Blockchain is essentially a trusted and secure transaction recording and audit system. (Read more about it here ).

Sounds like its something to do with accounting, finance and banking right? Well!Blockchain was originally created with those in mind but can be easily adapted to other applications with clear advantages of ensuring "trust" and "security".

One such application is the examination system. Its possible to build a framework for conducting academic tests using blockchain for better evaluation and maintenance of examinations such that the records are more credible, reliable and secure as compared to existing examination systems.

The current systems of conducting examinations are prone to fraud and manipulation either by students, external security breachers or by insiders with administrative access. These concerns can be effectively addressed through a blockchain based examination system.

The Shortcomings!

No Cross-Validation

The current examination system employs an evaluator from an educational institution,checking the answers to the questions asked. There's no re-validation of the evaluator's work, but only in a few cases wherein the results have been appealed and submitted for rechecking.

Score Manipulation

Any closed evaluation system is most open to undetected score manipulation by insider elements. The manipulation can be done at any stage; right from the first evaluation to the final data-entry in the database.

Database Manipulations

Since the data stored is under the control of a database administrator, it brings in the human interference element into play which is prone to bribery or threats.

Incomplete Performance Records

Current scorecards of typical examination systems do not provide enough data to represent the actual performance of a candidate. The scorecards contain very limited information,recording mostly the final score,omitting details of the questions asked or the methodology/format of testing. Lacking this information, correlating the score with the caliber of the candidate mostly leads to inaccurate conclusions of the actual abilities/skills.

Result/Certificate Manipulations

Issuing of degrees or certificates to a candidate upon completion of a course indicates that the candidate has the expected skills and knowledge. However, these can be forged or granted even when the candidate doesn't meet the criteria through insider manipulation. There is actually no way to know (without a large scale independent enquiry) whether the certificates issued by an institution have been issued only when the criteria of issuance is satisfied and not otherwise. To add, the process of any independent enquiry of scale validating the authenticity of the issued certificate will be expensive and slow.

A public blockchain evaluating, recording and maintaining examination records will solve all these problems and provide a better alternative.

The Outlines of a BlockChain Based Solution!

1. Registration

Users (namely Candidates,Evaluators,Test Creators, Administrators, Developers) register verifying their identity using their email ids and other credentials associated with the institution.

2. Authentication

Once the user identites have been verified, they are assigned unique keycodes. These may used then to access the system for all practical purposes.

3. The Working

Once authenticated a according to his/her assigned role, perform actions such as add/delete/modify questions, add/delete/modify tests , administer tests, publish results etc. with full recording of their activity footprint in place that is never deleted.

Furthermore, even certain actions such evaluations of answers and or publishing of results may be automatically managed through blockchain for better transparency.

Thus, the test administration becomes fully automated,fair and transparent with minimal human involvement through adaptation of blockchain.

4. Trusted/TruValue Cerifications

A panel of eminent experts across a diverse regional and experience backgrounds may come together and evaluate exams. Certifications are automatically issued to candidates once a there is a majority consensus among the evaluators expressed through their evaluations, of course. The standards of the same may be adjusted as desired and on per case basis.

Every activity, addition, deletion (essentially called transactions) are recorded in a permanent chain of blocks which can never be altered or tampered in any way. In addition, any actions based on records such as publishing of results or certificates is automated and made transparent.


This is what makes a Blockchain Based Examination System a far better choice over the existing public or private examination systems.
