B. Pharm. in Pharmacology is a 4-year full-time undergraduate course divided into 8 semesters. Pharmacology is the science of drug action on biological systems. This course involves an advanced study of the sources, biological effects, chemical properties, and therapeutic uses of drugs.

Pharmacology is a science that is basic not only to medicine, but also to nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, and veterinary medicine.

Pharmacological studies range from those that determine the effects of chemical agents upon subcellular mechanisms, to those that deal with the potential hazards of pesticides and herbicides, and those that focus on the treatment and prevention of major diseases by drug therapy.

B. Pharm. in Pharmacology: What is it all About?

Pharmacology is essentially the study of drugs, their interaction with other molecules in the body, and their impact on the body. The discipline can be broken down into:

  • Pharmacokinetics- about the effects of a drug on biological systems.
  • Pharmacodynamics- about the effects of biological systems on a drug.

These two main areas of pharmacology are dedicated to providing a comprehensive picture of the safety and action of any kind of medication. Also explored within the discipline, are the molecular mechanisms by which drugs cause biological effects.

Pharmacology involves molecular modelling of drugs, and the use of drugs as tools to dissect various aspects of cell function.

Students enrolled to the course are imparted advanced learning in pharmacology of drugs, including the practical aspects of pharmacological screening for various medicinal agents. Such processes involve the use of appropriate animal model, biological standardisation, pharmacology calculations, in-vivo drug interactions, and toxicity studies.

This course is not synonymous with pharmacy and the two terms are frequently confused.

As a biomedical science, Pharmacology deals with:

  • Discovery, research, and characterization of chemicals which show biological effects.
  • Elucidation of cellular and organismal function in relation to these chemicals.

As a health services profession, Pharmacy is concerned with:

  • Application of the principles learned from pharmacology in its clinical settings.
  • Science-oriented research driven by pharmacology.

Pharmacology is crucial in:

  • Discovery of new medicines to help fight diseases such as cancer, heart disease and infectious diseases.
  • Improvement of the effectiveness of drugs, and elimination of the unwanted side effects of medicines, since different individuals differ in the way they respond to certain drugs.

Pharmacology is the study of how chemical agents, both natural and synthetic, affect biological systems. This study encompasses:

  • Investigation of the derivation, chemical properties, physiological and behavioural effects.
  • Mechanisms of action, biological transformations, and therapeutic and non-therapeutic uses of drugs.
  • Effects of chemical agents upon subcellular, systemic, physiological, or behavioural processes.
  • Treatment and prevention of diseases, and potential hazards of pesticides and herbicides.
