Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) is a post-doctoral degree that is awarded to people who have made exceptional and outstanding contributions to the world, in their particular field of study. Although ‘Doctor of Philosophy’ or Ph.D. is considered as the highest degree in many parts of the world, D.Sc. is one step above Ph.D. The course is majorly an honorary degree that is awarded to eminent knowledgeable individuals or doctorates who have contributed significant cognizance to the world with their research.

Candidates must understand that Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) is undeniably the highest academic award a person can get, and therefore not a lot of institutes are actually competent to grant such a degree. Only a few highly valued universities of the country offer this degree to candidates, some of which are as follows: -

  • Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Mumbai, Maharashtra
  • Banaras Hindu University Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh
  • Periyar University, Salem, Tamil Nadu
  • SRM University, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh
  • Sri Ramachandra University, Porur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu

There is generally nothing such as ‘Admission’ to this degree. Rather, the candidates have to first register themselves for this degree. After successful registration, candidates are given some time, usually a year to present their thesis. The work of the candidate is examined by highly intellectual people like Vice-Chancellors of the university from where the candidate desired to attain this award. The registration process is separately conducted by each university on their own.

An interesting thing about the Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) is that it does not involve anything like attending classes or studying. There is no curriculum too. Thus, it will not be wrong to say that it is not even a course. It is only a degree, which is awarded on the basis of research work. The candidates getting registered are given some time, usually a year, to present their thesis. On the basis of the thesis submitted and after some further examinations, the candidate is awarded this honor.

The average fee charged for Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) usually remains around INR 20,000 in India. Since this degree is awarded to eminent researchers who are already doing some astounding work in their field, they go on to continue their research work only. Doctor of Science (D.Sc.): Syllabus and Course Description

Being an honorary and purely research-based degree, Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) does not have any syllabus or curriculum. However, it is useful if a candidate knows some key things about the thesis that is to be submitted after registration.

The university, with which the candidate has got registered, gives it the specific structure of the thesis that is to be submitted. The university also gives a time frame within which the thesis is to be submitted.

The research work mentioned in the thesis must purely relate to the area/field in which the candidate desires the degree to be awarded. Further, if the candidate wants to attach some additional papers, he/she has to explain how these papers related to the ‘main theme or subject’ of the thesis.

The candidate must take care that any research work present in the thesis must not be from the research work done for Ph.D. or for anything before that. Also, the candidate has to attach some declarations regarding the originality and validity of the work.

After submission, the thesis is examined and evaluated by a high-level panel which is constituted by the university. Some universities also conduct a public viva voce to test the prowess of the candidate. If the candidate clears all the stages, he/she is successfully awarded the prestigious Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) degree.
