M.Tech. Structural Engineering: What is it about?

The major objective of the course is to impart advanced learning to eligible candidates in fundamental principles of Structural Analysis. Students are trained to implement such principles through different methods, in analyses of various types of structures, and to evaluate force and displacement parameters of such structures. Other course objectives include developing expertise in onshore infrastructure and sound background in specialized areas such as Offshore Structure/ Management (General)/ Bridge Structure/ Hydraulic Structure.

The course’s curriculum has been designed to produce engineers specialized in design, construction, repair, rehabilitation, and conservation, and maintenance of stability of structures. The course also offers the opportunity to such candidates to academically explore additional specialization in concepts of Bridge Structure/ Hydraulic Structure/ Offshore Structure as per the candidate’s interest.

Such postgraduates can explore lucrative career opportunities in areas of structural design and construction, offshore design and construction, oil and gas sector, bridge design, construction management, and hydraulic structure design. Engineers specializing in this field design all kinds of structures from houses, theatres, sports stadia and hospitals, to bridges, oil rigs, and offshore structures.

The course aims at providing civil engineering graduates with an advanced conceptual understanding in, and advanced knowledge and technical skills required for analyses and design of structures such as dams, bridges, pipelines, roads, towers and buildings, transport systems, harbors, airports, and railways.

The first year of study exposes enrolled students to comprehensive knowledge in structural engineering, and additionally, they have the option of specializing in any of Bridge Structure/ Hydraulic Structure/ Offshore Structure as per individual interest.

In the second year, students opt for internships at private and government construction companies, design consultant companies, and offshore companies towards gaining industry exposure.

M.Tech. in Structural Engineering: Who Should opt?

Aspiring eligible candidates would ideally have:

  • proficiency in Mathematics.
  • interest in, and aptitude for pursuing Information Technology and Mechanical branches of engineering.
  • strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • basic awareness of construction methods, and health and safety hazards related to structural engineering.
  • good communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.

Eligibility for M.Tech. in Structural Engineering

Candidates wishing to apply for the course need to meet the following criteria of minimum eligibility:

  • B.E. or B.Tech. in Civil Engineering or attained another equivalent degree such as Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Energy and Environment Engineering from a recognized institute, with a minimum aggregate score of 55%.
  • Students having completed M.Sc. in Environmental Science with at least 50% (45% for SC/ST/OBC candidates) marks in aggregate are also eligible to apply for the course.
  • Students in the last semester of graduation are also eligible to apply, provided they fulfill the other minimum eligibility criteria.

M.Tech. in Structural Engineering: Admission Process

Most institutes admit students based on their performance in a relevant entrance test, followed by a round of Personal Interview. Some institutes conduct their own entrance tests for offering admission. Admission process generally varies across colleges. However, GATE/NET scores are accepted at almost all institutes offering the course.

Admissions to the course is also conducted through a round of central counseling on the basis of the candidate’s obtained merit in PGCET.

Listed below are the major entrance examinations conducted in India for admission to the course:

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) – GATE is an all-India examination that is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to test the candidate’s comprehensive understanding of various subjects in engineering and science. The entrance exam is primarily held for admission to post graduate courses in the field of engineering, technology, architecture, and science.

GATE score is accepted for admission to various PG programs. The online test is a multiple-choice and numerical-type exam which is divided in three sections, namely General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics, and the relevant specialization-specific section.

UPES M.Tech. in Engineering Entrance Test (UPES MEET)- University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) conducts UPES MEET every year for admission to the course. The engineering entrance test is conducted in three phases for non-GATE candidates. It is an online test and the UPES MEET scores are accepted for admission to the course offered by the UPES. Candidates with eligible GATE scores are offered direct admission to the course, however, remaining candidates are needed to qualify the UPES MEET.

The test consists of questions from 4 sections, namely General Aptitude, English, Engineering Mathematics, and General Engineering.

Some other such entrance tests held in the country for admission to the course are:

  • Manipal University Online Entrance Test (MU-OET)
  • International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad

Job PositionJob DescriptionAverage Annual Pay Scale in INR
Structural EngineerThe job of a Structural Engineer is very closely related to that of Civil Engineer. They are primarily concerned with designing and constructing buildings and structures that are safe and capable of withstanding the elements to which they may get exposed, as well as improving the structural integrity of existing buildings. Structural Engineers design, plan and oversee the construction of new buildings and bridges, or execute alterations and extensions to existing properties or other structures.4,87,328 – 1,009,681
Bridge EngineerFalling under the broader career category of Civil Engineering, a Bridge Engineer performs engineering duties in planning, designing, and overseeing construction and maintenance of building structures, and facilities, such as roads, railroads, airports, bridges, harbors, channels, dams, irrigation projects, pipelines, power plants, and water and sewage systems.3,25,204 – 8,64,235
Offshore EngineerAlso known as Oil Engineer, Offshore engineers research, design, construct, operate, and decommission (close down) offshore rigs, which are used to drill for gas and oil beneath the seabed. They find economical and environmentally safe ways to extract oil and gas from natural reservoirs beneath the seabed, design offshore installations and drilling equipment, oversee drilling, and are responsible for maximising production.4,08,933
Construction EngineerA Construction Engineer is a Civil Engineer that designs, manages, and oversees projects which include rebuilding roadways and designing buildings within the construction industry.
