M.Tech. in Control Systems: Who should opt?

Ideal candidates for the course would possess:

  • STEM Skills: This is the core foundation of any engineering stream. STEM sands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and is essentially the amalgamation of these 3 subjects. Students are taught a series of mathematical and logistical problems that form part of the curriculum.

  • Team-working Abilities: to work as a team on a particular project. Every assignment consists of a team that works on various parts of the project. Here team work becomes important for task-execution.
  • Strong Analytical Skills: Engineering being a complex field, every problem needs to be looked at from a different angle. Uncertainties and hidden errors are bound to occur. Therefore, students need to approach the problem with an active and alert analytical mind. The devised must meet all guidelines with minimal risk in the construction process. Experimentation might be needed before the actual projects shapes up so that the budget isn’t wasted on failed attempts.
  • Attention to Detail: a keen eye needed to bring every task to perfection with maximum accuracy. Every project involves detailing during the planning and construction process. Students need to make sure that nothing important gets missed that could derail the enterprise.
  • Excellent Communication Skills: for communication with peers and professors. Engineering involves usage of technical language on a daily basis. Students might deal with people who might not understand the complex terms of technical language. They hence need to make it understandable and meaningful to such clients.
  • Awareness: of the latest advancements in the technical field of Control Systems.
  • Leadership and Management Skills: for execution of responsibilities and tasks that might be needed in team-management.

M.Tech. in Control Systems: Admission Process

Some colleges also offer admission on the basis of obtained merit at the level of graduation. However, generally, in most of the colleges and institutes offering the course, admission is provided based on the candidate’s performance in a relevant entrance test, conducted at any of State and national levels, followed by a subsequent round of counselling.

The round of counselling involves two additional rounds of Group Discussion and Personal Interview, wherein candidate’s general aptitude for the course is examined. A merit list is subsequently released issued by the institute allocating available seats to the qualifying candidates.

The most popular such examination held in the country for admission to the course is GATE.

The national-level online-based GATE. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination that primarily tests the candidate’s comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in Engineering and Technology.

The pre-requisite condition to be met for appearing in GATE is that the candidate must:

  • Be in the second or higher year of a 4-year integrated Master’s degree programs (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/ Technology.
  • Be in the fourth or higher year of a 5-year integrated Master’s degree programs or Dual Degree program in Engineering/Technology.
  • Have qualified any of the examinations conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/ AICTE (e.g. AMIE by the institute of Civil Engineers India-ICE), as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech.
