Description

Radiodiagnosis is the branch of medical science that focuses on the use of radiation, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance for diagnostic, therapeutic, and research purposes in medicinal practice. It is related to disciplines of anatomy, pathology, physiology, and interventional procedures. The prerequisite for pursuing this course is an MBBS degree obtained from a recognized university approved by the Medical Council of India or any of the State Medical Councils.

Upon successful completion of this 3- year long postgraduate course, postgraduates can specialize in Radio-diagnosis, and join any of the Radiological Sciences Laboratories. Such postgraduates are lucratively employed in hospitals, academic/educational institutions, and may even pursue private practice of medical imaging. The areas of specialty for such postgraduates include genitourinary, biliary, gastrointestinal, central nervous system, and specialization in organs such as brain, head and neck, and procedures such as X-ray, MRI, CT, and Angiography.

The course fees in India ranges between INR 30,000 and 5 lacs for the total duration. The average annual salary offered to successful postgraduates of the course in India ranges between INR 3 and 10 lacs.

MD in Radiodiagnosis: What is it About?

Radiology is the branch of medicine that uses imaging techniques to diagnose and treat diseases that cannot be seen from outside the body. A variety of imaging techniques, such as X-ray Radiography, Ultrasound, Computed Tomography (CT), Nuclear Medicine and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are employed for diagnosing and/or treating various complicated diseases. Interventional Radiology follows medical procedures in line with standard procedures of Imaging Technologies.

Radiographers are often also known as Diagnostic Radiologists. They are responsible for interpreting or ‘reading’ medical images and producing brief and concise reports based on them. They analyze the findings and impressions of such diagnoses. Such reports are then referenced to the Clinician, either routinely or on emergency-basis. The results thus obtained of the Imaging procedures are stored digitally in PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System).

MD in Radiodiagnosis: Who should opt?

Ideal candidates for the course would possess the following:

  • Interpersonal Skills: Both Applied and Practical Radiology require interaction with people. A relaxing, calm manner, and empathy are of use in putting the patients at ease. Sensitivity and self-control are other such useful skills.
  • Logical Abilities: To make correct and helpful diagnoses, one must possess advanced analytic skills to glean useful information from the collected data and to identify the problem. One must determine the diagnosis with the least distress to the patient. Problem-solving skills are needed in suggesting and administering treatment.
  • Technical Skills: The ability to learn and stay updated on the ever-evolving range of diagnostic imaging equipment used in the field is crucial in the field. Machines used in MRIs, CT scans, PET scans, ultrasounds and other imaging studies involve accuracy and finesse. Knowing how to effectively use them properly and safely is necessary.

  • Communication Skills: Test results need to be communicated to patients and other physicians or specialists, requiring the ability to present information clearly and concisely.
