Artificial intelligence(AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are two very hot buzzwords right now.

Artificial Intelligence is the broader concept of machines being able to carry out tasks in a way that we would consider “smart”.

Artificial intelligence is a broader concept than machine learning, which addresses the use of computers to mimic the cognitive functions of humans. When machines carry out tasks based on algorithms in an “intelligent” manner, that is AI. Machine learning is a subset of AI and focuses on the ability of machines to receive a set of data and learn for themselves, changing algorithms as they learn more about the information they are processing.

Machine learning is a field 0f computer science that gives computer to ability to learn without being explicitly programmed.

1- Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning used to be heard when the topic was Big Data Analytics – and maybe in some sci-fi movies- before; but now it is impossible to ignore them with the self-driving cars, knowledge navigators...
2- Artificial intelligence has a longer history than machine learning. It might sound like a new term but we can say it has been studied and improved over the years since Aristotle introduced syllogism, which was a method of formal and mechanical thought.
3- As seen above, we can consider Machine Learning as a subset of AI. When Artificial intelligence is the whole idea of a technology that behaves like a human, machine learning algorithms are about finding patterns and invariants in big data. These self-learning algorithms enable the machines to learn from data sets (inferential statistics) and they are a series of steps that lead to the completion of a task.

Machine learning is designing algorithms that enable making better predictions and inferences from existing data. That's one small part of AI. Machine learning outputs can contribute in reasoning and critical thought process algorithms.

AI and Machine learning are quite the different things in some aspects.
Technically speaking Machine learning is the current application of the AI.
AI is anything that is performed by machine ,that makes it smart , where as machine learning is something that the access to data is given to the machine , so that it can learn based on the algorithm it is implemented.

    ###Early Days ######

    Artificial Intelligences :

Devices designed to act intelligently – are often classified into one of two fundamental groups – applied or general. Applied AI is far more common – systems designed to intelligently trade stocks and shares, or manoeuvre an autonomous vehicle would fall into this category.

    Machine Learning :

As technology, and, importantly, our understanding of how our minds work, has progressed, our concept of what constitutes AI has changed. Rather than increasingly complex calculations, work in the field of AI concentrated on mimicking human decision making processes and carrying out tasks in ever more human ways.

Artificial intelligence (AI, also machine intelligence, MI) is intelligence displayed by machines, in contrast with the natural intelligence (NI) displayed by humans and other animals. In computer science AI research is defined as the study of "intelligent agents": any device that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of success at some goal. Colloquially, the term "artificial intelligence" is applied when a machine mimics "cognitive" functions that humans associate with other human minds, such as "learning" and "problem solving".

Machine learning is a field of computer science that gives computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed. Machine learning is closely related to (and often overlaps with) computational statistics, which also focuses on prediction-making through the use of computers. It has strong ties to mathematical optimization, which delivers methods, theory and application domains to the field. Machine learning is sometimes conflated with data mining, where the latter subfield focuses more on exploratory data analysis and is known as unsupervised learning.Machine learning can also be unsupervised and be used to learn and establish baseline behavioral profiles for various entities and then used to find meaningful anomalies.

Machine learning and deep learning is sub-set of Artificial Intelligence. Machine Learning is an approach towards artificial intelligence.
